Wall stud calculator

The straight-run stud layout count for a framed wall at your on-center spacing.

Loading calculators…

How it’s computed

Studs = ceil(wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1 end stud. Default spacing is 16" on-center; enter 24 for 24" OC.

Decimal-exact and deterministic: identical inputs always return identical results. This is the same math Ask Donnie’s estimating engine runs — not an approximation, and never a language model doing arithmetic.

Common questions

Does this include corners, openings, and blocking?

No — this is the straight-run layout count. Corners, T-intersections, king/jack studs at doors and windows, and blocking are added on top, per your framing details.

16" or 24" on-center?

Whatever your plans and code require — 16" OC is the common default for load-bearing residential walls; 24" OC appears in some engineered/advanced-framing designs. This calculator just does the layout math for the spacing you give it.
