Drywall sheet calculator

Sheets to cover an area, waste included — works for drywall, OSB, plywood sheathing, or subfloor; just set the sheet size.

How it’s computed

Sheets = ceil(area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet size). Defaults: 4×8 sheet (32 sqft) and 10% waste.

Decimal-exact and deterministic: identical inputs always return identical results. This is the same math Ask Donnie’s estimating engine runs — not an approximation, and never a language model doing arithmetic.

Common questions

I hang 4×12 sheets.

Set sheet_sqft to your sheet's real face area — 48 for a 4×12 sheet, 54 for a 54-inch-wide × 12-ft board. The formula is the same.

Is 10% waste enough?

It's the common planning default this calculator ships with. Rooms with many corners, angles, or openings cut more — raise the waste input to match your layout.
